What is SaLT?

Paediatric speech and language therapists diagnose and treat children with spoken language difficulties and social communication difficulties. The care offered by a SaLT can be in your home, in your child’s nursery or in school. SaLTs will usually complete a formal and informal assessment of a child’s abilities in language / communication and then complete a report based on his / her findings. Subsequent work may involve working directly with the child, offering advice and support to parents or training a key person to work alongside the child. SaLTs can work with children who present with the following difficulties and needs:

  • Speech delay or disorder
  • Dyspraxia
  • Autism / ASD
  • Attention and listening difficulties
  • Selective Mutism
  • Dysarthria
  • Augmentative and alternative communication
  • cerebral palsy
