Hello my name is Aqeela!

I completed my BSc (Hons) in Speech and Language Therapy at Leeds Beckett University, UK in 2016. After graduating, I worked in Brunei for 5 years in a centre specialising in adult neurology, cancer and rehabilitation and led the Speech and Language Therapy team there. Here my clinical skills grew and I learnt about leadership and working as a team. I also realised my true interest and love for paediatrics because of my previous experience in placements and volunteering.

My main interest is children with complex needs and augmentative and alternative communication. I aim to be an advocate for all children and young people I work with and provide an evidence-based service for all. Words First has given me the opportunity to pursue my true interest and passion and I hope to achieve my professional goals with Words First and be a part of its growth.

What I love about Words First is the work-life balance. Other than an SLT, I am also a wife and mother to my 2 year old son. Having the time to watch him explore the world will always be a gift. When I don’t have my hands full with my family, I try to improve my cooking skills and rewatch my favourite TV series – Friends. If you had to ask my friends to describe me, I think they’d describe me as passionate, goal-oriented and often sassy!
