Hello, my name is Emily! I completed my Master’s degree in Speech and Language Therapy at City University of London and qualified in 2021. My interest in child language development began during my undergraduate degree in English Language and Linguistics. As a student SaLT I gained invaluable experience with a wide range of service users, including stroke survivors in an acute stroke ward, adults with learning disabilities and lots of time with children in schools and early-years clinics! My particular area of interest is social communication and I am passionate about working with children diagnosed with ASD and complex needs. During my studies, I worked at a local nursery and quickly learned that I wanted to pursue a career working with children of all ages and supporting families.
Words First is an incredibly supportive company who have made me feel very relaxed and confident as a newly-qualified therapist. I admire the company’s creativity, dedication and child-centred approach.
In my spare time I love to get creative; a lot of my time is spent baking, painting, knitting or making things out of clay! My favourite thing in the world is spending time with my family in beautiful South Wales, visiting beaches and walking around the cliffs.
A book that had a big impact on my life is The Electricity of Every Living Thing by Katherine May. I love this book because it’s an inspiring first-hand look into Autism in adulthood and explores the implications of late diagnosis in a positive yet realistic way. I read this book as a teenager and it sparked my interest in working with people with Autism.
