BSc Speech Language Pathology
Hello, my name is Jo. I qualified with a BSc in Speech Language Pathology from the University of Cape Town, South Africa, in 2019. I then went on to work in a small hospital in rural KwaZulu-Natal, where I was the only Speech and Language Therapist servicing the district. I had the amazing opportunity to work closely with the community and with all age groups. It was this experience that highlighted my passion for working with school-aged children. Since starting at Words First, I have thoroughly enjoyed connecting with teachers and teaching assistants to encourage and support them in creating communication-friendly classrooms. What I absolutely love about Words First is the opportunity to grow and develop as a therapist, and I feel grateful to be part of such a supportive team. Coffee and the outdoors are my favourite pastimes! In my spare time I enjoy running, hiking and finding new coffee spots. The book that has had the biggest impact on my life is When Breath Becomes Air, by Paul Kalanithi. I love this book because it really highlights how precious and fleeting life is!
