BSc. (Hons.) Speech and Language Therapy
Hello, my name is Kathryn!
I qualified as a speech and language therapist from the National University of Ireland in Galway in 2010. Since qualifying, I have worked in a range of jobs – as a school laboratory technician, a support worker and events organiser for adults with brain injuries, a teaching assistant and a speech therapist in Primary Care and CAMHS. It was while working as a teaching assistant that I developed a passion for working in the classroom and this helped me to realise the role that the speech and language therapist can have in schools. It was this that led me to Words First!
In Words First, I work with mainstream primary and secondary school students. I have a particular interest in Developmental Language Disorders and using literacy-based approaches in therapy- I love how versatile books can be! I am also a mentor for therapists who are recently qualified or new to the company. I like being able to put myself back in their shoes and help them to figure out problems that I once had when I was starting out.
I’m passionate about the ethos of Words First – I love the presence I have in my schools and how I am the “go-to” person and familiar face when students and staff need support. I enjoy collaborating with staff members and it is lovely to be part of a company that my schools value so highly. The Words First therapists I work with are wonderful, both professionally and personally!
In my spare time, I enjoy playing music. I play the oboe and piano and have had the opportunity to travel all over Ireland with orchestras and concert bands, playing in front of thousands of people. I am a bookworm and also enjoy catching up with friends, preferably with a cup of coffee and cake!
If you had to call my best friend and ask her to describe me, I think she’d say I am funny, caring and creative!
