Megan Maguire, BSc (Hons) Speech and Language Therapy
Hello my name is Megan. I completed the 3 year undergraduate Speech and Language Therapy programme at the University of Manchester, qualifying in July 2020. Prior to my degree, I volunteered as a classroom assistant at a school and therapy centre for children and adults with special needs in California. While shadowing Speech and Language Therapists at this centre, I was intrigued by the various methods they used to help their students communicate, such as digital and play-based activities. What I found particularly interesting was how creative and enjoyable students found these activities, as well as their effectiveness. During the pandemic and prior to graduating, I volunteered as a SaLT assistant, providing Telehealth sessions to children with speech, language and communication needs. My special areas of interest is Developmental Language Disorder (DLD). Supporting these children with their speech, language and communication needs is very fulfilling. What I love most about working in Words First is the team of therapists that I work with, as they are very supportive and there is always someone to seek advice from. When I am not working as a SaLT, I enjoy spending time with friends, running and baking. A book that has had a big impact on my life is A Thousand Splendid Suns by Khaled Hosseini. I loved this book because it was fascinating to read about how life is for women in different parts of the world.
