My name Romy-Lee. I have 27 years of clinical and training experience as a paediatric occupational therapist. I qualified in 1996 with a BSC in Occupational Therapy from the University of the Western Cape. After my degree, I successfully completed the American Occupational Therapy Certification Board Exam (1998) and spent 2 years working in the USA extending my experience and knowledge in paediatrics. During this time, I privileged to be awarded honorary citizenship by Clayton Ezell, the then mayor of Lawrenceburg, Tennessee, USA.
During 2011, I was trained in Therapeutic Listening, Astronaut training (a sound-activated vestibular visual protocol), Move to Play – Play to Talk (building patterns and partnerships in play) in the USA and completed my Ayres’ Sensory Integration Certification and Sensory Intelligence Adult Practitioners course in 2012. I am also qualified as an Interactive Metronome practitioner.
In a training capacity, I have trained for Sensory Intelligence Consulting® both privately and for the Western Cape Education Department. I managed outreach training programmes in communities in South Africa and developed training manuals published through a local education forum, which has been translated into three different languages. I have extensive training in learning difficulties including dyspraxia, dysgraphia and visual processing difficulties, and have conducted research into these specific learning difficulties. Added to my research I have written various articles contributing to specific learning difficulty courses at Oakley House School.
I have endless passion and energy to empower schools and parent communities. My role within Words first is that of Clinical lead. Together with a team of committed therapists, we will embark on the exciting venture of working within schools to provide child focused evidence-based therapy and share our knowledge in implementing sensory principles in the home and at schools.
I am the mother of 2 boys. In my spare time you will find me looking for bargains at charity shops or on the beach with my fur babies. My favourite book definitely has to be Oh the places you’ll go ( Dr Seuss.) If my best friend was to describe me in 3 words it would be dependable, passionate and driven.
